Frequently Asked Questions

If you don't find what you're looking for here, contact us.

Q: What kind of tee should my player be kicking from?
A: It depends on the player's grade and level of expertise. As a rule, we encourage our high school kickers to kick off a 1 inch tee, both their Junior and Senior year seasons. This prepares them to go to the ground easier once their Senior season is over.

Q: What is a Leg Lock Bag?
A: PKS was the first program to design and formalize both an in-season and out-of-season leg lock program using our portable Leg Lock Bag. Leg lock is bringing the foot to the ball with a full locking and closing of the leg, just as ball-foot contact is made. The closer the player is to perfect leg lock, the better the kick will be.

The formula for distance is: D = EM. E is for the speed and energy created by bringing the foot to the ball. M is for the mass of the foot that hits the football. We have always felt there should be another factor in the formula for distance, and that is D = EM+LL. LL = Leg Lock.

Q: What kind of shoe should my player wear for kicking?
A: The best football shoes made for Punters and Kickers have been patented by PKS. However, as a general rule, players should only wear soft-molded, pleated shoes that are very flexible and that allow full depression of the kicking foot. Technically, for Punting and Soccer-style Placekicking, the toe is not used to kick the football.

Q: If I send my player to a Scholarship Camp that is based primarily on competition, will he receive a scholarship?
A: Our philosophy on these types of camps runs contrary to the typical promotion of them. For over 20 years, we have placed more players in college than any other program in football. We have hundreds of players in college today. The reason PKS Kickers and Punters are in college on scholarship is that they attended PKS camps that are primarily teaching and learning camps, and by doing so, they learned the skills and techniques that mde them better than other players.

Once a player has reached a certain peak and is good enough in all phases of the kicking game, then a competitive camp might be beneficial. As a parent, you should have any such camp provide you with a list of colleges that attended the program the year before and a list of those who are attending any given year that the camp is offered.

Q: What is the true value of great kicking in a football game?
A: It is difficult to put a fixed value on the kicking game, as at it means different things at each level of play, and to each team or individual. In 2004, a top NFL team lost the opportunity to advance to the Super Bowl because of a missed field goal. The value of the lost income involved in this particular case was tremendous.

One thing is for sure: when two teams are equal in all aspects of the game (running, passing, defense, etc.), the true value of the kicking game comes into focus. This is true for BOTH Punting and Placekicking. In games where teams are closely matched, the team with the best punting game and superior kicking (field goals and kick offs) will have the advantage.
